We recently put together a short educational video called “The 14 cm Problem.”

During apneic oxygenation, nasal cannulas deliver oxygen at the nares, but the oxygen still has to travel ~14 cm to reach the vocal cords, and much of it disperses before reaching the airway.

The video demonstrates how quickly oxygen concentration drops just centimeters from the cannula tip and why studies on nasal cannula apneic oxygenation have shown mixed results in the ED and ICU.

It also shows an alternative approach: delivering oxygen directly at the vocal cords through the ET tube using the Turbo® O₂ Cap.

If you’re interested, we host a short live airway discussion every Thursday evening.
